Learning, Unlearning, Continuing – Ecotopian Antiracism Reading Circle Returns

Learning, Unlearning, Continuing – Ecotopian Antiracism Reading Circle Returns

After our summer break, our Antiracism Reading Circle has started again!
We meet every Sunday at 19:00 Central European Time (till 21:00) on Signal, and everyone who feels connected to Ecotopia – past, present, or future – is warmly invited to join. Whether you’ve been on the Biketour before, plan to come, or are just curious about the community and the work of unlearning racism, you are welcome.

We’ve reflected on how we want to continue, and decided on this

  • Every other week we continue reading Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad. These sessions are focused on antiracism and how it relates to ourselves and our community. We’re currently at the Allyship chapter (p. 125), and on november 2nd we discussed You and Tokenism.
  • On the alternate weeks, we have self-prepared sessions: people bring in topics that move them, that feel urgent, or that connect to current realities of oppression and resistance. These can also include themes that directly relate to Ecotopia Biketour, such as how to make the tour safer for marginalized people, how to intervene in oppressive dynamics, or how to apply the book’s ideas to real-life situations. Anyone can suggest, prepare, or facilitate a session.

Our next session on November 9th is about the tyranny of structurelessness. Let us know if you want to join and we’ll share the resources with you!

The reading circle started as part of Ecotopia’s effort to take responsibility for racism within our community.
As we reflected in our previous post Holding Ourselves Accountablethe Biketour, like any community, is not free from the oppressive structures that shape society.

Ecotopia Biketour, despite its values of openness and equality, is not automatically accessible or safe for everyone. Privilege plays a role in who can join, who feels heard, and who feels welcome.
We also want the reading circle to be one of the places where we look at these dynamics honestly and learn how to do better.

We want to actively unlearn racism – in our organizing, in our travels, in how we listen, speak, and act. When we ride together, we share more than a route — we share responsibility for how we treat each other and how we respond to oppression when it shows up among us.

If you’re curious, motivated, or simply want to listen and reflect — come join.
You don’t need to have read the whole book or be an expert. What matters is willingness to engage, to listen, and to keep learning.
Send us a message if you want to join the Signal group, receive our resources, or if you have a topic idea for a session.

Let’s keep learning and unlearning together.
Let’s keep building a community that practices what it dreams of.

At the moment, our group is small – just a few of us have been meeting regularly – but we hope to grow this space and involve more of the wider Ecotopia community.
