Worldcarfree.net is a clearinghouse of information from around the world on how to revitalise our towns and cities and create a sustainable future. In addition to serving the carfree movement, Worldcarfree.net offers resources for architects, planners, teachers/professors, students, decision-makers and engaged citizens.

Cyclists in Sofia take to the Streets
500-600 people took part in the annual "Climate Day" bike ride in Sofia, Bulgaria on May 15. People of all ages, on bikes, roller skates, in wheelchairs or in baby buggies walked and cycled through Bulgaria's capital. For more info and pics: Bulgaria Indymedia
Towards Carfree Cities VII - Istanbul
With the theme "Building a Livable Future in a Changing Climate", this year's conference will be held at Istanbul's Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts from August 27-31. Registration is now open. Youth Exchange in Istanbul
Following the Towards Carfree Cities conference, WCN is holding a youth exchange on the theme of how youth can become engaged in urban planning decision-making. The 27 participants have been selected and planning is underway.

EC takes Poland to Court
The European Commission recently announced it would take Poland to the European Court of Justice over the construction of the Via Baltica expressway through the Rospuda Valley. The Polish government had previously given the go ahead to permit the expressway, which would plough through the country's treasured Rospuda Valley in north-east Poland. Ongoing: EVS Internship Available
We're looking for young volunteers aged 18-30 to work in the network’s Prague office for a 12-month period through the European Voluntary Service (EVS) programme. The intern would have some flexibility on which projects to would work on, based on his/her skills, interest and experience. Applicants must have or find an officially approved EVS sending organisation. This is an ongoing opportunity. More info here.
Spoleto: A People-Oriented Carfree City?
These days, the small city of Spoleto, Italy is constantly offended and attacked by cars. Traffic is out of control and last winter PM10 exceeded the legal limits in this small city. To see it free from cars would finally be a dream! We hope that the project "Spoleto: Carfree City Open to People" will yield some positive results, but the environmental group Legambiente Spoleto expresses caution at this very ambitious and expensive project. read more >>
